What's demo trading?

Demo trading, commonly referred to as crypto paper trading, provides users with a simulated trading environment where they can practice trading cryptocurrencies without the involvement of real money. Essentially a form of practice trading, demo trading allows users to engage in simulated transactions that closely mirror real-world market conditions. This invaluable tool serves as a risk-free space for traders to refine and test their trading strategies, gain insights into market dynamics, and enhance their decision-making skills. Not only is it a safe haven for beginners to familiarize themselves with the intricacies of crypto trading, but it also serves as a sophisticated playground for seasoned traders to fine-tune advanced strategies before implementing them in their actual market portfolios. This dual-purpose platform caters to both novice and experienced traders, offering a dynamic space for continuous learning and skill development in the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrency trading.

What are the benefits of using demo trading?

  • Risk-free trading: one of the biggest advantages of demo trading is that it allows traders to test their strategies and make mistakes without risking any real money. This makes it an ideal environment for beginner traders to learn the ropes and gain experience before trading with real funds.

  • Testing trading strategies: demo trading provides traders with a platform to test and refine their trading strategies without the risk of losing money.

  • Improved confidence: by practicing in a simulated trading environment, traders can gain confidence in their decision-making skills and strategies before entering the real markets. This can lead to more informed and profitable trading decisions in the future.

  • Access to market data: many demo trading platforms offer access to real-time market data and trading tools, allowing traders to gain a better understanding of the crypto markets and how they work.

How do I use demo trading?

Note: this feature is only available on the web.

  1. Go to okx.com, hover on the Trade section and select Demo trading to launch the trading simulation mode page.

Select Demo Trading from the Trade option on the main bar to start risk-free trading

  2. You’ll see the total amount of demo assets that you can trade with. (Remember, this isn't real money — it’s for simulated trading only)

  3. Navigate to Trade, and select the trading pair (for example, BTC/USD) to select the token you'd like to buy. You may also switch to other instruments by selecting the Trade button again

  4. Choose the order type, place your entry price in USDC (if applicable) and the amount of BTC / total USDC value you want to buy, and select Buy BTC

How do I reset the assets on demo trading?

Reset is only offered once you have no open demo positions and no pending demo orders, so close your open demo positions and cancel your pending demo orders first.

Then reset your demo assets:

  1. Open Demo trading.

  2. Go to Assets, then Demo trading, then My assets.

  3. Find the demo asset you want to reset and select Reset.

Reset restores the initial demo amount for that asset. It doesn't let you choose your own starting amount, and it doesn't change anything in your live trading account.

If you can't find the Reset control, check that no demo position is still open and no demo order is still pending, then reload the page.

How do I exit demo trading?

Tap Exit next to Demo Trading to return to live trading.

What assets are available for demo trading on OKX?

We provide demo trading with a range of cryptocurrencies. It's important to remember that these are virtual assets for simulated trading only and don't represent real money.

Can I withdraw the profit I make in demo trading?

No. Demo balances, and any profit or loss you make in demo trading, are virtual. They have no cash value, they can't be withdrawn, and they can't be transferred to your live trading account. Demo trading and live trading use separate balances, so a gain or a loss in demo trading doesn't change your real funds. Use demo trading to test how an order behaves and how a strategy performs, and treat the result as practice rather than as money you can take out.

How does one trade in the demo mode on OKX?

Once you've switched to Demo trading mode on our platform, you can select any market of interest and start placing trades using the virtual money allotted to your account.

What types of trading can I simulate with OKX’s demo trading feature?

What's the difference between spot trading and futures trading in the demo mode?

Spot trading in demo mode allows you to practice buying or selling cryptocurrency directly. On the other hand, futures trading lets you practice entering contracts to buy or sell a certain amount of cryptocurrency at a specified future date and price.

How can demo trading help improve my confidence?

Demo trading allows you to practice your decision-making skills and strategies in a simulated environment. By experiencing the process without the risk of losing real money, you can build confidence in your abilities before entering the real markets.

I can't find a way to upgrade my demo trading tier or level. Is it hidden somewhere?

Demo trading on OKX doesn't have tier distinctions at all. Every user starts with the same full access to all demo trading features — no upgrades or unlocking required. If you're looking to access more advanced trading features, consider switching to a live trading account.

Why does the demo trading chart look almost flat?

Demo markets usually see far less trading activity than live markets. When few demo trades take place on a pair, its candles can stay almost flat for long periods, and the demo chart can move differently from the live chart for the same pair. Before treating this as a chart fault, check three things on the demo market you're on: the time interval selected on the chart, the recent trades list, and the depth of the order book.

A thin order book also affects how your orders fill. A market order is only matched inside the price limit for that market, and any quantity that can't be matched inside that limit is cancelled instead of resting in the order book, so a large market order can end up cancelled rather than filled. Setting a limit order price, or reducing the order quantity, makes a fill more likely. The rules are set out in Price limit rules and Basic order types.

Why don't my demo assets or my demo balance load?

If your demo assets, your demo balance, or the demo chart show as zero or don't load, start with your browser: clear its cache and cookies, then reload the page. If that doesn't help, open demo trading again in a different browser, and try a private window with browser extensions turned off. A demo balance that was there the day before and reads zero now is usually a display problem of this kind rather than a change to your account.

If the balance or the chart still doesn't load after that, submit a support ticket with screenshots or a screen recording of what you see, so we can investigate.

Why is demo trading not working?

If you encounter any issues with demo trading, please submit a support ticket with a screen recording or screenshots so we can investigate further.
